Attacks of mildew of the vine on Vitis vinifera susceptible variety (A) and vine variety resisting the disease (B)
Varieties resistant to fungal diseases classified for 2018

Twenty per cent of the plant health products consumed in France are used on vines, even though they only cover 3% of the utilised agricultural area. Under the goals of the Ecophyto plan, reducing the use of pesticides on this crop is essential. INRA, IFV and vine growers have developed new varieties that are resistant to fungal diseases and have been classified as “wine grape varieties” for the 2018 crop year.

Selection of probiotic cheese starters: "2 in 1" strains for a functional Emmental

Why should it be necessary to choose between technological and probiotic properties when some bacteria can supply both? Scientists in the UMR STLO have developed expertise in identifying "2 in 1" strains that will enable the development of fermented foods with enhanced health effects. A clinical trial is currently under way to validate the concept of an Emmental cheese that is able to prevent colitis.

Enterome
INRA congratulates its partner Enterome on its recent fundraising

Created in 2012 in Paris to exploit discoveries made by INRA’s quantitative metagenomics platform, Enterome has announced that it has raised funds worth €32 million. Enterome is a pioneer in the development of innovative therapies for diseases linked to abnormalities of the gut microbiota.

Insects and olfaction: olfactory coding in the turbulent realm

Long-distance olfactory orientation is a difficult task because atmospheric turbulence deletes odour gradients and breaks up the odour plume. By reproducing the dynamics of these odour plumes in the laboratory, INRA scientists have been able to describe in a noctuid moth how neurons in the first two layers of the olfactory system encode this complex signal, whatever its dynamic.

Artificialised land and artificialisation processes: determinants, impacts and levers for action

On 8 December 2017, INRA and IFSTTAR handed over a collective scientific expert report on the artificialisation of land that had been commissioned by the French Ministry for Ecological and Inclusive Transition, ADEME and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Land is a non-renewable resource and since 2015 the rates of its artificialisation have been one of the ten “wealth indicators” developed by the Government to monitor its public policies.

Enzyme activities in soils: from a measurement method to a standard

The Environmental Biochemistry Platform, Biochem-Env, has optimised a method to measure enzyme activities in soils using colorimetric substrates in micro-well plates. Its robustness was demonstrated in the context of an international, multi-laboratory trial which has since led to the development of an international standard.

Prévention ou traitement d’une infection intestinale par Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron
Prevention or treatment of intestinal infections with Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron

Infectious pathologies in neonates and infants are a major problem in both human and animal health. The greater sensitivity to infections in these populations is closely linked to the immaturity of their immune systems.

Méthode de sélection de souches bactériennes surproduisant des exopolysaccharides
A method for the selection of bacterial strains overproducing exopolysaccharides

A method for the selection of bacterial strains overproducing exopolysaccharides (EPS), carbohydrate polymers that are secreted into the environment.

An integrated infrastructure in the European cattle sector is born!

INRA, the French National Institute for Agricultural Research, won the call for the European project INFRA-IA, for its proposal of integrating research infrastructures (RIs) for increased research capability and innovation in the European cattle sector: SmartCow. The kick off meeting of this infrastructure will take place in Clermont-Ferrand, from February 19 to 21 2018.
