The successes achieved by the four Carnot Institutes managed by INRA have confirmed the importance given to them by the Institute in its efforts regarding partnership, transfer and innovation. Like last year, this newsletter devotes a special issue to these Institutes.

You will find herewith some stories that illustrate the results, technology transfers or new projects achieved through partnerships with industry.

Plant2Pro®, the most recent Carnot Institute to be managed by INRA, focuses on plant production. We present here two success stories: the rhizotron that has just received the 3rd FIEEC award at the Carnot 2017 meeting, and an article on pest-resistant potato varieties.

France Futur Elevage has chosen to present an open consortium that enables industrialisation of the development process for new software and decision-support tools for use by actors in animal health, as well as a project which is testing dietary supplements to preserve the health of small ruminants.

Qualiment®, which focuses on human foods and nutrition, explains how legumes can be included in food products such as yoghurt, cheese and pasta.

3BCAR©, the Carnot Institute for renewable chemistry, details the successful recycling of oil-based waste and presents the new skills in fermentation that are being developed by its network of laboratories.

Phenotyping root growth using rhizotrons

The continuous and non-destructive analysis of plants under controlled conditions is now possible thanks to high-throughput phenotyping technologies. More specifically, rhizotrons enable characterisation of the morphometry of plant root systems, either isolated or in association, as well as interactions between plants and soil micro-organisms. INRA and its partner, Inoviaflow, have now patented this system.

Pest-resistant potato cultivars

The potato group at the Institute for Genetics, the Environment and Plant Protection (UMR IGEPP) identified genes for resistance against the main pathogens of potato within the accessions kept by the BrACySol Biological Resources Centre.
Since 2008, an efficient public-private partnership has made it possible for French breeders to register thirteen new, resistant potato cultivars in the official catalogue.

COMBITAN: sainfoin and sweet chestnut in sheep feed

The France Futur Elevage Carnot Institute has funded a project to test the efficacy of sainfoin granules enriched in condensed sweet chestnut tannins in order to control parasitic nematodes and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in sheep and goats.

Artificial intelligence to improve the control of infectious diseases in animals

During the MIHMES project, INRA scientists developed novel approaches to create more robust epidemiological models. STEMAH, a new consortium supported by the France Futur Elevage Carnot Institute, will use these results to create new decision-support tools for actors in animal health.

Fermentation at the service of alternative "dairy" products made using plant proteins

In the context of a Qualiment® revitalisation project, a process for the fermentation of pea proteins has demonstrated its relevance to enhancing the sensory qualities linked to the use of plant proteins. Thanks to carefully selected microbial cocktails, it has been possible to formulate plant-based foods such as “yoghurts” and “cheese”.

Legume pasta adapted to the needs of older people

A manufacturing process has been patented that can obtain pasta made of a mixture of durum wheat and legume flours. This pasta has a high nutritional value because of the levels and complementarity of the amino acids it contains. It is also easy to digest and has a low fat content, which means it is particularly well-suited to the needs of older people.

From oils unfit for consumption to lubricants for the construction industry

New formulations resulting from collaborative research by AGRIBTP have been patented for applications in the construction industry and used successfully to create novel biolubricant agents for construction concrete and road coatings. Partner SMEs were involved from the launch of the project in creating a production and marketing company dedicated to these innovative products.

I-ferm: fermentation know-how and tools for industry

I-ferm federates the resources and skills of a network of technology platforms specialised in fermentation. This group has been organised by the 3BCAR Carnot Institute, and its cross-disciplinary nature is able to meet the needs of companies in a variety of markets.

This fungal pretreatment aims to degrade the  hemilignocellulosic network to facilitate the subsequent stages of hydrolysis, thanks to a better accessibility of carbohydrate degrading enzymes to their substrate.

Assessing services provided by agricultural ecosystems to improve their management

An innovative study conducted by INRA has assessed, in detail, the ecosystem services provided to farmers and society by the areas used for agricultural production. This new knowledge, presented at a conference held on 24 October 2017, will help improve how these ecosystems are managed and provide ideas for reducing the use of inputs in farming.
